i question connie chung's moral compass a bit because of her association with her husband (maury povich) and his own history with violence against the black and brown community by using their trauma and stories for entertainment. i'm glad to hear her road to shattering the glass ceiling for women—and shattering the "bamboo ceiling for asian-americans"—as the second woman and first asian-american to anchor a major news broadcasting network. i can only imagine the anxiety she had to endure constantly being surrounded by white men who sought her downfall.

chung has such a storied history with reporting, covering cases from the watergate scandal to tanya harding, and i found myself constantly amazed by her achievements and failures (frequently, not of her own doing). white men were always incensed by the fact that, even in heels and makeup, she asked tough questions and was assertive and confident. she's from an older generation where women were always pit against one another for drama so she was constantly compared to barbara walters and would snap back with, "i'm not just competing with barbara, i'm competing with (list of men's names i forgot), you sexist pig." nowadays, i support women who support women and want to see more of it which connie chung said as much.

after she was let go because of crying manbaby (dan rather) at cbs, connie chung pursued corrupt cops and feds for racially-motivated violence against black people, from roy smith to ben chester white. it just boggles my mind again because of her association to maury. once she took opportunities to chase the truth, she didn't let go and you can see her love for the job even in interviews today.

My dream job as a kid was to be a journalist, and I got a glimpse into that alternate universe through this memoir. Connie Chung's voice is clear here: she is relatable yet teaches something about what it means to take up space.

I wish she had explored what it means to be an Asian-American past the surface level, but I'm unsure how much I get to judge a memoirist on the content they choose to write about.
