at first, I didn’t know what to expect from the story. and it was pissing me off, but in the end I ended up truly resonating with this book in someways. especially with parental expectations and conditional love on our end and what we believe even if her parents claim something different. I feel like it showcased the difficulties navigating not being completely connected to your culture in some ways, which is another thing I can relate to. this wasn’t a great love story I feel like it was a life lesson though. The love story in this book was real showed that people make mistakes and people don’t heal in the right way and we don’t have healthy habits sometimes and we have to fight for our happily ever after.

I was excited for this book so I'm high key disappointed. It's insta-love with miscommunication trope in end I just wasn't invested.

4.something stars, but almost 5!
If you’re an African daughter (or not) here for the DRAMA, plot, culture, and romance, BUCKLE UP (like genuinely, strap in).

This is not my typical genre so I know it affects my rating. I wanted a little more depth about the cultural differences. Overall, not a bad book, just not anything special to me.

A girl who falls in love and has to choose between family and the guy she loves. I loved every part of this book! The third act break up made me mad but it always does

FLEW through this book. Loved the writing style and dialogue and discussions throughout about finding your voice, choosing between your heart & your family, grief, love, etc. Even though the main premise included a trope I hate, the book still managed to win my heart, which is so rare, and I'm really glad I picked this one up on a whim!
