I enjoyed this and am glad that I listened to a patron's recommendation to check this out! My hope for Emerson's next book is that the mystery might be more complex, and if the same characters are featured, the grandmother is given more depth.

I bought this book as a "blind date" from Barnes and Noble. While reading, I thought that the premise of the book was really good, but I feel that it moved a little slow. I felt that it took too long to get to the climax of the book. That being said, I do feel like it is a decent true crime book. I would caution that this does have graphic descriptions of crime scenes, including violence against children.

3.5ish stars - not a great start to my reading year

This book has an awesome premise and I was definitely intrigued. However, the tension isn't really carried through because the pacing is so slow. Also, the writing is at times overly flowery and at others very stark and awkward. This definitely felt like a first novel.

Having said that, I do think that the premise is interesting enough that it might be worth reading future books with this main character (or at least giving them a shot to see if the writing is improved). We'll see!
