Read as part of the "100 days of Dante" challenge. Inferno was profound and thought-provoking. It certainly kept me up a few nights. The reality of eternal judgment is something we too often ignore and downplay and Dante's work to really consider the horrors of Hell has impacted me.

I enjoyed it for what it was as a casual reader who was curious about the subject matter. I find it enchanting how Christian and Greco-Roman mythology is blended together. I can definitely appreciate how much of an impact this work has had on modern-day and historical culture.

Dante’s Inferno is so unbelievably important and influential, that I feel far too unqualified to speak about it. Its impact on not only literature, but the general population’s perception of scripture, is undeniable, and seeing the root of these images is fascinating. Dante’s writing is marvellous, and the depictions of torture and gore in this book are intense and gripping. There’s also a humour that comes through as a modern reader - this book reading as a self-insert biblical fanfiction is hilarious in a way which I imagine only contemporary readers would experience.

However, the reading experience of Inferno isn’t always the most enjoyable. This is largely due to the repetitive structure, as the 34 cantos are very similar, yet increasing in intensity and brutality. Another issue though is entirely due to time - Dante’s depictions of Hell are now so well-known, that the reading experience is hindered by a lack of surprises.

3.5 ⭐️ ~ was challenging and insightful. I really enjoyed going through this poem. I needed breaks and had to further educate myself throughout the book, but I can see myself coming back to it again in the future. I can see the influence it has had on today’s media. (Personally was interested to read it as it inspired a raid series in a video game I love!)
