I can’t review this book without giving spoilers, so caution. You know a movie that is wildly successful so they try to replicate it by making the exact same movie, plot, etc. like home alone and home alone 2 - the only difference was the city the hijinks took place in.

That is exactly what happened here, which is why I’m confused it took 8 years to write a sequel that is exactly the same as the first - all he did was change characters names. It was the exact same down to the twist, being in the middle, and even further, the middle twist having to do with a name change. It’s crazy how lazy this book was.

Also, tweens plotting sophisticated murders is a bit unbelievable.

The story was fine and I wanted to know how it ended. But I felt the same way about this one as I did about the previous one, The Kind Worth Killing. So much repetition of events. The reader had to see each character’s perspective figure out what was going on. The book could’ve been 100 pages without that. And even though the first book was a rendition of an already existing story, it felt much more original than this one. Just nothing exciting. Somewhat disappointing for me as I generally love Swanson. Not bad, not great.

Sequels can either be really good or really bad and this one was kind of in the middle but more towards really good. I don’t think it was as gripping as the first but I still enjoyed following Henry and Lily. They always seem to be up to something and I’m secretly rooting for them.

I don’t get the hype for this book, it was boring and the writing was a pain to get through.

Hmmm. I found this to be a little pointless as a sequel. It felt formulaic and with entirely random details dispersed throughout. I wasn't invested in the characters in the same way as the first one. It got completely nonsensical towards the end and I was instantly annoyed lol.

Not worth the read (the first one is good on its own!).

What bothered me (spoilers):
Spoiler Kimball and Lily's relationship was COMPLETELY unrealistic and it bothered me immensely. Considering how the first book ended, it was nonsensical for them to form the friendship they did (especially for her parents to just be fine and dandy with him?! sorry what?!). And don't get me started on Lily's entrance into the story - it was giving kool-aid man vibes just bursting through the wall.

The story was good but I had a hard time remembering the characters Henry and Lily from the 1st book and there was quite a bit of reference to the first book - could have used some further background info. I would have rather just had the main story without the reappearance of the characters from the past book. I’m not a huge fan of the investigator as a character.
