This was a solid book. Better than 3 stars because the characters, including animals, were more complex than a standard novel.
I didn’t find it that suspenseful or scary, which was good for me, because that genre doesn’t generally appeal to me.

One of my all time favorite books, it was just as good upon re-read as it was the first time I read it nearly 30 years ago and even more poignant now having loved some amazing dogs of my own in the interim.
I finally decided to stop reading with 100 pages to go. This was my first and likely last Koontz book. I felt that Koontz couldn't keep his characters in character and even though the concept of an intelligent and communicable dog is already a stretch realistically, the extent Koontz took it was too unbelievable. I understand why people like Koontz' writing, but it's too basic for me and I feel like it is almost too easy to read. It's really cheesy, which is frustrating and a little insulting. Koontz gives you everything: doesn't write with context clues, tells all the details instead of showing all the details. His is not my favorite style of writing and I think I'll leave it for the masses and stick with authors who have the knack for making my brain think instead of giving it all the answers.
I enjoyed the story line about the smart dog!
The dog, Einstein escapes from a lab, along with something else.
The something else is chasing after the dog. The dog is running away, not like his life in the lab. Especially since they increased his intelligence and ability to learn. And eventually communicate.
Of course the NSA is after both the "something else" and the dog. They follow the path of carnage from the "something else" and someway try to track the dog as well.
Travis meets the dog on a hike, from then on they are inseparable. Later they meet Nora.
I enjoyed the re-read.

A cool little story - some of the characterization is a bit stereotypical but some is great, e.g. the genius dog, and the mutant villain is tragically touching at the same type he's frightening. The author does a good job of creating and sustaining tension. Altogether a very enjoyable read, and much better than the movie they made out of it.
Love, love, love this book. One of my all time faves.
Excellent read. First Koontz I have done other then a non-fiction by him which I really liked. Really enjoyed this novel and plan on reading many more by him.
