2.5 stars. If bridgerton and the cruel prince had a baby it would be this book. I liked the idea but it was poorly executed. The pacing was horrible, the fantasy was okay, but the end ruined it. The plot twist I did not see coming, but it didnt make much sense. It was rushed and random. The only thing i liked was the banter between Ivy and Emmett.

Spoiler later on. Decent book. Not something I'm totally crazy about and would recommend. I read it because my younger cousin wanted someone to talk to about it. Its written like a step up from a middle grade fanfic. It's trying very hard to push itself up there with Actor. It wasn't poorly written but just very 2d and predictable. I figured out the fairies could lie by like chapter 8 at the latest. Not bad but very clearly a middle grade book with adult themes even if they are a "fade to black" moment.

This is a hard book to review because while I was invested in the story and wanted to know what was going to happen next there became a point where I did not like the characters. This is being touted as a cross between The Cruel Prince and The Selection. Well I have not read the former. I definitely agree that it is very similar to The Selection. That part of the story I would say was interesting to me the most, but I found that as the book progressed, it started to get bleaker and more depressing to me.
Something very specific happens to a side character and it really bothered me and I don’t know why the author had that happen. I also did not realize that this is part of a series/duology/ or maybe triology because when the ending occurs, I actually had to reread it thinking that I had missed something.
I feel like I probably will read the sequel but if it’s going to be a drawn out series, I don’t think it’s for me. The writing was very good and had that popcorn like quality to it that makes for an easy read. If it sounds interesting to you I definitely recommend that you pick it up. Just know that it was darker than I wanted.

It was a good fantasy story-quite dark in places but it wasn’t adding anything hugely new or original but it was engaging enough for me to want to read the next book. The romance in this was ok but would like to see that developed a bit more in the ending book of this duology. I liked the idea of fae bargains and there were some twists and turns I didn’t anticipate particularly around the sister and betrayals from people I didn’t really expect. Overall a good story but a bit more character development was needed in the main character and I would have liked to have heard more from the other girls in the trial (I think this would have worked better with more dual-perspectives rather than brief insights into the other girls as some of their perspectives were more interesting than the main character’s).
Wow this one got me!!! It had some many aspects that weren’t new but somehow they were so fresh and still left me with my jaw completely on the floor!! Also Emmett!?? I love youuuuu. This was picked for bookclub and I’m so glad it was because i hadn’t heard of it before this and i am dying for the next book. 4.5 stars

I loved this one! When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it.
I'd picked this book up at random and decided to give it a read and I'm glad that I did.
I love when the Fae are more fae-like.
The characters were believable, I liked the plot.
And where's the second book already?
