written in 1993, a dark dystopian life of societal separation, segregation and religious bigotry
lauren is a baptist ministers daughter, raised in a world of hardship and protection beyond the wall that gates her community
when more people start to die in accidental crossfire, lauren questions the life shes been lead to believe is the safest option
struggling with the ideas of religion versus science, she creates her own, earthseed meaning god is change
when the community is attacked and burned to the ground lauren escapes but loses her family, finding a new family and teaching them her religion
for the religious friends this an excellent moses/jesus esque story on freedom, finding yourself, your people and your connection to the world

There were some parts of this book I really liked and others I really didn't. The 39 year age gap between Lauren and her love interest who she first recognizes through associating him with her father is one of the major dislikes. I like both characters, but the situation is uncomfortable, especially when he is made out as a sympathetic, likable character. I'd had this book and the novel it was adapted from on my to read list for a while, and I'm glad I got around to reading this for school. It's really neat to see the roots of the literary solarpunk movement as it's rooted in afro futurism and the questioning of the continuing hegemony of colonial structures that are still being offered as solutions to the climate crisis today. It is weird to be reading this in 2024, though.

I’m just in shock like … how was she this intelligent? it’s a disservice to call her psychic but I think she was just paying a lot more attention n was a lot more insightful than many. I love everything I’ve read by Octavia Butler she’s amazing and it is gorgeous reading this in graphic novel form! So happy I read this 🥰

This is my third time reading Parable of the Sower, and the first time reading it in the graphic novel version. I love John Jennings work. The colors, line work, and overall style are vibrant. The illustrations really make the story come alive.
