I read it because the movie from the 90s scared me terribly as a kid. So bad I couldn’t watch it until adulthood. Then with the new ones I started getting curious about the book. Of course there’s some stuff I could’ve done without (THAT section), but I was surprised by the fact that despite the length there wasn’t that much I would’ve cut. And it was interesting how faithful the newer movies were.

*As for the racism and use of racial slurs. This story takes place (mostly) in the 50s and 80s in a small town that has its own special branch of the KKK. The racism was authentic and realistic. And I’m glad he didn’t try to pretend that those things wouldn’t exist in reality, but ESPECIALLY in Derry. Derry, being a place being manipulated by an alien that feeds on fear and other negative emotions. Please be fr if you don’t understand the use of language etc.

*As for Beverly. She was a young girl being abused who grew into a woman being abused. Her story was authentic to girls/ women who experience that, before they find liberation. She did what she could based on how she had been conditioned her entire life.

I didn't actually finish this book nowhere close. I couldn't get past the horrific themes of the story (and I'm not talking about the clown or murders) Some of the biggest themes in this book include homophobia, racism and sexual assault. As a member of the LGBT community obviously, the homophobia hit me the closest to home. I am aware of when the story was published and that the AIDs epidemic was a very real thing. But reading pages of dialogue with characters calling people "faggots" and saying "God sent AIDs to kill you" was too much for me. It's important to recognise history and learn from it and I'd probably recommend straight people read things like this to see the truth of what LGBT people have gone through and continue to go through. But when it is the history of your community and it's shown in this way it hit too close to home for me and made me uncomfortable.
I'd be really interested in hearing how other gay people found this book, especially any older readers who lived through the 80s and the AIDs crisis. I'd also be interested to hear how other victims of these types of themes found this book. Were you able to get through it and thought it was a really truthful example or did it bother you too?

The only scary thing about this book was the cover. (I’m going to have to find a longer book to read before the end of the year so that I don’t have to look at this cover anytime I revisit my 2024 year in books!).

Book was difficult to read and weird. There were a lot of characters, and time was too fluid. It wasn’t like many books where chapters vacillate between past and present or future. Time actually would switch within the same chapter (at times, even the same paragraph or scene). It made it hard to follow the events.

Also, I failed to see how Beverly’s act of love did anything at all for any of them, especially given how the book ends. And what was up with the Yoda turtle????, especially its explanation of its stomach ache???? Definite two most WtF moments for me.

I kept thinking I was reading an early version of Stranger Things, but Google assured me this book had no contribution to the show, despite a number of similarities.

I’m glad I didn’t DNF it, but neither am I glad I read it.

This book is actually immensely sad and I need to lie down for a while. It also could have been shorter and less racist and antisemitic. But it was immensely compelling - there was absolutely no point where I considered putting it down.
I had a really excellent time comparing the overlap of Dark Tower and IT, thinking about all the Easter eggs and crossovers that I've already read about or seen in King books and adaptations. My favorite part of this experience was honestly slotting in a new piece of the SK puzzle.

This is one of my favorite books I’ve read in a long time. I didn’t expect to be such a fan, given I’ve not read King before. Of any film of television I had consumed associated with his writing (which also was not much), the characters and stories presented felt flat and a little lifeless. His writing is so much richer in context and visuals. It’s a pleasure to read. You really come to understand the place, Derry, and love the brave kids who choose to confront a seemingly eternal and invincible evil.

I’d rate higher if not for the disturbing treatment of the female protagonist in the group. I think King could have achieved his thematic point without having all the boys lose their virginity gang banging her. Yes, the kids battle an evil and are thrust into adulthood. We get it without taking this unnecesary, pervie step. Just because it’s horror, doesn’t make it okay.
