Ahhhh I loved this superhero book so much! It is so funny and well-written! Dylan is such an interesting and unique character and I absolutely love her narration! And the whole crew! The found family! My tiny little queer heart cannot handle this book! I can't wait to read the rest.
All of the characters are so amazing and I love them. I need all good things to come to them in the future books. I need them to continue saving the day and being absolutely amazing just like they are in this one. So SO good.

this is such a fun book, i loved all the characters, the found family and the kpop references. i'm excited to read more of the series <3

So I haven’t read a book that fast in a very long time! I adored the friendships and “found family” in this book! The representation was phenomenal because it explained everything very naturally and really fit into the story. It was the perfect mix of superhero, friendship, teen angst with some confusing emotions and funny situations/banter. I really enjoyed this book and want to read the next one right away!

This book came into my life like a pick axe, blowing my mind wide open and just as swiftly stuffing the quivering spirit of mine into a new hole that so accurately describes me. I am at once reshaped and reassured. I was hooked at the concept when it was pitched to me and I loved every character immediately (except Lou to be fair but I at least understood and sympathised with him for being annoying) Each one is like that one character in any other book that I think is hot and amazing and I fall in love with but there’s a whole gang of them of equally awesomeness in one book and my mind was staggering. Plus, before this I had never read a story with trans and nonbinary characters. It took me by surprise but it was so refreshing to see fresh representation. As a bi with questioned gender it helped me get a sharper definition of myself. So rep like this is so important and there really is something -someone! - here for every member of the LGBTQ community. Plus I’ve never read about characters that like the same things I like (that I didn’t write myself anyway). It’s just chef’s kiss GIF.
Anyway to the story: fantastic. If you know anything about superhero stories you know pretty much how this is going to turn out but the fun is in the unique characters, the amazingly creative powers (with their own spins for the more familiar amongst them) and the wit. Oh the sheer delight of poor little Dylan trying to convince household objects to shut the hell up so she can go to sleep. And that’s about the only non-spoilery thing I can give you. As even given the ending, things turn out a bit more honest and dark that would have been shocking a few years ago, but now most of us have watched ‘Invincible’ it’s gruesome but lower impact.
The relationships are what really make the characters shine. Dylan’s self loathing and obliviousness in the areas of teen crushes may be a bit heavy handed for some but I think it’s pretty accurate and helped me connect with a character who seemed to be outshined by her supporting cast at parts. Eventually she’s dragged out of her shell by a growing group of ride or die friends and a surprise love interest and witnessing her emotions and reactions to all this is so in-depth and realistic. Combined with the fantastic rep I could really see my life on these pages. SJ has really grown while writing this and I’m excited for everything they have to write in the future.
What makes the book even better is knowing that there are already many sequels and more swiftly in the way with spin offs and all sorts planned. Soon the Cute Mutants will rival the MCU in breadth - but in creativity, diversity and references to pretty hair Cute Mutants wins by miles
