I highly recommend taking your time with these stories. They are absolutely incredible. I also recommend looking each of these people’s social media profiles before or right after reading their excerpt!
you are your best thing is a gift to 2021. the essays that i’ve read have left me moved and have given me the space to reflect upon things that i have not wanted to confront in a long time. not all essays are winners, but that can be said about anthology.
for black millennials, those who hesitate to be vulnerable or attach themselves to shame… need to read this. when i read the first essay by jason reynolds i immediately called my mom to tell her about it. he shared a story about his reconciliation with his mother and in my heart i felt the need to do the same. other times, i scanned essays and sent them to friends and loved ones.
this was one collection i always had in my bag. i didn’t read it on a consistent basis and sometimes i would skip around and not read in chronological order… but if you are in need of a quick coffee shop read, or have about 20 minutes of free time while dinner is cooking, i’d recommend having you are your best thing on hand and picking it up when the time is right.

I’ve loved Brene Brown’s books and Tarana Burke’s, so I had to read this. What smacks me in the face is that we need voices of people of color to understand how they’ve experienced shame and how they build resilience to it.
I love the essay format and the variety of perspectives
