I found this book really frustrating! Everything felt contrived, from each author's specific expertise (helpfully and explicitly spelled out in nearly every chapter lest we forget!) to the convenient arrival during the climax of the book. The characters are tiresome and one-note in the first half, and while the beginning of Part 2 shows signs of wanting to subvert our expectations of the characters and show some depth in the characters, the attempts fell flat for me. This is personal preference, but the phonetic spelling of the Scottish accents really annoyed me, especially when Calum's description of his grandmother's sexual assault was heavily marked with grrrrrratuitous rolling R's as did the authors' dedication to keep their characters from swearing. (You really expect me to believe that an inneuendo-dropping person like Kat wouldn't swear loudly when spooked? Or that in a crisis situation, even someone as wholesome as Cassie wouldn't yell "oh shit" when her husband is in danger instead of "Oh, poop"? )
If this book were marketed as YA, I think it would be a lot more palatable. The tone, sense of humor, and themes just didn't strike a chord with me as an adult reader.

I loved how unique all of the character voices were and the mystery didn't go where I thought it was going to! Some heavy themes and triggers to be aware of, but it still managed to be a read that felt light and funny.
