This is book one of the Branwyn Blood: The Exiled Fae of Texas series and the main character is a Brownie or Bwbach, who is compelled to do things for others if they ask for her help. That one word, leaves her unable or refuse, even if it could mean that she dies! She has lists of places and jobs she has to do each day and even at night, with people taking advantage of her and not even paying her in money or goods in return. Humans don’t know that she can’t refuse to help and she goes about each day with a huge utility belt around her waist, with everything she could possibly need for any job she has to do. Her only friends are Rhydian and his sister Rhiannon, who are the only other supernatural beings she knows in Austin. There are dragons, not that they have ever shown her this side of themselves and Rhydian, who is in a wheelchair, is the one who seems to always be there for her with another hearing aid or money for a new bike, both of which she goes through in great numbers. Even without her hearing aid, she can lip-read and uses ASL to communicate, never having the opportunity to escape others asking for help.
When a young deaf girl, Jax, daughter of Carmen a woman who she babysits for, disappears one night when out with her sister and her mother, as well as her new boyfriend, leaves Branwyn feeling someone is passing a message to Rhydian, but in fact it is actually for her. There are other bodies turning up all over the city, with all their blood removed, meaning there are more Fae or Tylwyth Teg in the city, something she had never heard of before. She had always been taught to keep a low profile, as Rhydian and his sister try to, not to gain the notice of the other Fae in Underhill, somewhere she has always been warned to avoid at all costs! She ends up falling over a few dead bodies, which brings her to the human police’s attention, making her life even more complicated. She wants to find Jax, but finds a creature has their claws set on her and she herself is in danger. Her nature is to always help others and she can’t help herself when asked, but this time it is her decision to want to find the missing girl, and she is pulled into a strange series of events and dangerous foes. Lots of Rhydian trying to get Branwyn to reduce her adherence to her nature and to find work arounds to helping people all the time, instead of half killing herself. But also lots of Welsh terms for each kind of fae being and secrets held and kept from her for far too long, which could leave you confused at times. Branwyn will find out more about her kind and why someone might want her, but it comes with great loss all around as more Fae come into Austin and mess with humans.
