Disturbing. Lots of coercion, sometimes violent, sometimes they just reprogram you and that all seems to be OK with everyone which leads to slavery: again, totally OK. People who are sensitive to the thoughts of others... hate children. I am suspicious that things aren't going to get morally clearer as the series goes on.

This book is cold and cruel and slides away from any metaphors I try to close it into. Also: I loved it.

I hear people talking about Octavia Butler like she wrote how-to manuals, like she's moralizing, and I think: are we reading the same person? Because at least with books like this ... it does not feel like a Life Lesson. It feels like a heat check, to see whether her expert sensory writing can make us totally buy into the wildest ideas she can create. (and it can! it does!)
