This short novella comes across as a practice exercise for the great writer. In and of itself, it is a simple, mildly interesting story of a young woman and older man who fall in love and struggle to maintain authenticity in their marriage. It is told from the wife’s perspective, and Tolstoy deftly conveys both her legitimate grievances against her husband and her glaring blind spots. She always yearns for the deep passion they felt at the beginning, unable to grasp as her husband does that love evolves through time as people change.
It seems like practice because Tolstoy is clearly trying out his ability to understand the female perspective in Family Happiness. He is also (at a young age) trying to imagine how people—and couples—must feel as they age. As always with Tolstoy, it is written in accessible but beautiful prose. This story is worth reading if you’re a Tolstoy buff or if you’ve grappled with any of the same issues involving the development of relationships as you age. Tolstoy’s insights into the human psyche were apparently already in place as a young man.
