Hands-down one of my favorite short stories and one I cannot shut up about. Ever since I read it in high school, it's stuck with me because it's just that good. I have always loved the genre because it's grounded in a realistic setting and yet has an element of magic that just might be believable. Paper Menagerie speaks to the generational divide, cultural assimilation, heritage, familial ties, belonging, and loss. I remember being so touched by this story that I ended up crying. Wonderful story progression especially for its length. It is so genuinely beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. I highly recommend it.

yeah i cried like hell, especially as Asian-Canadian who can relate

A masterful weaving of truth and magic.
As a mixed race person, I definitely understood the pushing away of my own foreignness but not to the same extreme. The humanity is real and heartfelt. The magic is sweet and beautiful.
