The Paper Menagerie is one of my favorite short stories EVER.
The writing skills are immaculate in the way Ken Liu tells this story. I was in awe (and in tears) while reading it. The emotional depth is astoundingly when you consider how short this is.
It's beautiful. It still brings tears to my eyes and it's been years since I read it for the last time.
It's time for a reread, I guess.
I need to read more from the author.

“Son, I know that you do not like your Chinese eyes, which are my eyes. I know that you do not like your Chinese hair, which is my hair. But can you understand how much joy your very existence brought to me?”

I'm not crying you are. This was such a beautiful and an emotional short story. It's just 30 pages but I couldn't stop crying. The mom is so precious and she has all my heart and after reading her letter all I want to do right now is just give my mom the biggest and longest hug in this world

really good and i almost cried

I cried so much reading this. It was so beautifully told. Being loved by your mother is a different kind of love and to neglect it because of her culture is another level of cruelty.
