It's a YA fantasy novel that I found through tiktok. Some of the reviews for this book refer to it as a Nigerian Harry Potter and that doesn't feel right to me. As a huge Harry Potter fan, this book is better. The characters have more dimension and the story has good pacing. It's part of a series and I look forward to reading the rest. Overall, I'm going with a solid 7/10, would definitely recommend.

Re-read for the third book in the series. Very imaginative and unique. Love all of the Nigerian folklore and magic interwoven in the story. Great Character growth for Sunny.

This is the coolest fantasy YA novel I've read in a long time. The magic system was awesome, and I enjoyed the characters, especially my bb Orlu. I loved the setting in Nigeria. Can't wait to read the next one!

I liked this, but my socks remained firmly on my feet. I loved the setting, and how Sunny is the ultimate outsider. A lot of the book is spent exploring the new magic world which Sunny has discovered co-existing with her own. The climax was not particularly well-explained, unfortunately. Also, while I did like it, it was not incredibly compelling either. But how awesome to have a fantasy novel with a protagonist-of-color in a non-Western setting (and not just for *exoticism*'s sake).

I loved this book. The audiobook was especially enjoyable. I loved the band of young characters and will recommend this to my high school students.

This book was incredibly well written and told a gripping story. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite my cup of tea. I don't think that I will read the next one, but I do not regret reading this one.

Although I deeply resonated with the 2-star reviews for this book and do not care to know what happens next, I’m giving this book a 3 because #blackvoices and also because I think the author did a decent job of highlighting racism, bullying, and global economic disparities. I just wish the storytelling was better and more believable
