I feel like I have been reading this for over a year, due to how slowly I made my way through it. This is not a fault of the book at all. I really enjoyed it, especially the first half, which I read via e-book. However, I read it painfully slow since this book is mainly long internal monologues or in-depth descriptions of food and the scenery, as opposed to being dialogue heavy, which I can read much quicker. It was very apparent early on that this book was a love letter to girls, women, and particularly girls/women of color who have gone through any type of abuse. I could also tell that this was deeply personal and hopefully cathartic for the author to write.

After getting to about 50% mark, I was frustrated at how slowly I was reading and switched to the audiobook. I did think the Wild Ones were very interesting and I wish I got to learn more about them as individual people. I found the romance between Paheli and Taraana to be cute but I wish there was more time to make it feel more natural. I liked that no one was a perfect character, and almost everyone, including those we are meant to root for, have flaws and troubles of their own that aren't erased or forgotten by the end of the book. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. I liked a lot of aspects of it but I also felt like there was so much build up, only for everything to be "solved" so immediately.

Regardless, I really enjoyed reading this (despite my annoyance at my slow reading pace) and I think this would be especially impactful for young teenage girls.

I found the pacing of the book a little strange and conflicts seemed to be resolved rather easily. However I loved the main characters (even if there was too many)  and was excited to see what would happen next. My favourite part is all the places they visited. I loved to look up the cities so I could better create a setting in my minds eye. Also the food in this book 😋

Nafizas writing is absolutely stunning as always, but when it came to plot in this book I simply could not find it.

DID NOT FINISH: 7%

DNF at 7%. So confusing. I have no idea why the author keeps throwing out fantasy words, but not giving any context as to what those words mean. I really wanted to love this, but bad writing style is a deal breaker.

This book tackled a very hard subject but infused it with a story written like poetry and set in a magical world that gave these girls a way to protect them from the horrors of the world hating women.

It took me awhile to finish this books because I had to take breaks between reading cause the anger and sometimes despair at the world would become too much but I really enjoyed the story and how it was written. The only thing is the romance between Pahlei and Tarranna (pretty’s sure I spelled those wrong) didn’t seem natural to the story and I kind of wished it didn’t happen.
