Best series i have read so far

Surprisingly I really enjoyed this series. I found it entertaining, engaging, romantic and full of action. I really enjoyed reading about Kylie’s friendships and boy problems as well as her many other issues including an identity crisis, figuring out who her real family was, how to fit in, who is trying to kill her and how to get along with her mom.

I found Kylie to be older than portrayed – I believe she’s 16 in the book; however, a lot of her words and actions made her feel to be in her early 20s or even older than that. I definitely found her more mature compared to other teenagers. Other than her boy problems, in which she became more of a teenager, I respected her. She had a lot of things on her shoulders yet she handled them with care. I also enjoyed her semi-meddling with the camp counselor, Holiday, and the tall, dark and handsome vampire.

A lot of side characters – Della, Miranda, Perry, Lucas, Derek, Holiday, and Brunet were also very invested in the story line. They didn’t feel too much like secondary characters but instead was a vital core to Kylie and her story. What I enjoyed the most was how much each of the characters plus Kylie changed throughout the series. Della and Miranda was portrayed as the scary vampire and crazy witch in the first book soon because Kylie’s best friends and roommates and were essentially a rock to her crazy life. Brunet was introduced as some stiff government person in the first book but later became a father figure to Kylie and was very protective of her. Holiday also became vital to her life and became almost like an older sister where they shared secrets and concerns with each other. Perry was also a laugh to read about – I found him highly entertaining and adorable when he was crazy jealous about Miranda and the guys she flirted with.

Lucas and Derek were the two boys Kylie pondered over. Honestly I kind of wished Kylie ended up with the other boy (not going to mention who) instead of who she chose at the end. Mainly because they seemed to connect together a lot more plus he was always there for her and didn’t hide anything from her. He seemed to always sense when she was feeling down or troubled and would immediately swoop over to help her. That being said, I did like the other guy too – the one Kylie ended up with only because they did seem destined to be together, I guess. The main reason why I wasn’t so fond of him was because he always had some secret and wouldn’t even respond to her texts or calls yet claimed he loved her. I mean, hello, the least you can do when you’re away is text her back. But nooo, he basically ignored her for the few days he would be away and then come back as if nothing happened.

I also loved the plot and the realization of who Kylie really was. Actually I thought it was fairly obvious by the end of the last book but it took three books to figure it out. Granted, I didn’t know the name of her species but certainly the attributes. That being said, I still very much enjoyed the process in which it took for her to finally figure things out. Also, can I just state that I find the whole “protector” rules to suck? I mean, how can you protect others if you can’t even protect yourself with the protector strengths and instinct? Kind of defeats the purpose of protecting someone.

Overall, great series and I’m already putting the spin-off series on my TBR list because more Della also means more Kylie and the rest of the gang.

A pre-warning, this review will contain spoilers for the previous books in the series. Read at your own risk.

Wow. I literally just finished this book. It blew me away. Like, I think I'm on Neptune or something right now, this book was so amazing. Chosen at Nightfall is the final book in the Shadow Falls series by C.C. Hunter. C.C. does an amazing job messing with my feels. She does everything just right, so that I am completely overwhelmed by feels, but in a good way. The book did not murder or harm my feels in any way. Which, let me say, was a welcome reprieve. Books recently *cough*Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare*cough* have simply harmed my heart. Chosen at Nightfall caused my heart to leap and soar, there was some pain, but everything is wrapped up in the end. There are a couple strings left untied, but they will lead perfectly into the sequel series about the main character's best friend Della, which comes out next year.

The main character is Kylie Galen. In short, her father and grandmother are dead ghosts who visit her on occasion, her mother and stepfather are divorced, her mother is dating a man Kylie believes to be a creep, and her grandfather and great-aunt are WAY overprotective. But somehow, she manages to love her family anyway. Oh, and I forgot to mention something. Kylie was dating a guy named Lucas. Turns out, he cheated on her. To his credit he didn't go through with the other girl, and never planned to, but still. And then there's Derek. He may not be the love of her life like Lucas, but he's a steady constant. He's always there when she needs support. In the book, Kylie will choose one of the boys mentioned above. Kylie is a REALLY strong character. She makes a lot of tough decisions sixteen year-olds should not half to make. Yet somehow, she makes them with pride and grace, even though she doesn't always realize it. These decision making skills have also made her the official relationship guru at Shadow Falls (the camp and school she attends with other supernaturals). The fact that she actually has good relationship advice completely baffles her. Kylie is also a strong person who doesn't back down, though this can sometimes (okay, very often) lead to her being obnoxiously stubborn about some things, it also makes her relatable.

The writing in this book is superb. C.C. Hunter is able to perfectly portray the voice of a teenage girl going through teenage issues. Not necessarily normal issues, but teenage issues non the less. The story is powerful and has a clear, and good, message. One of the characters, a woman named Holiday who is like an older sister to Kylie, often talks about people's quests. Meaning, you set a goal for a period of time or for life. Kylie has a reoccurring quest to discovery who she is. This is an issue often addressed by teens. The teen years is really a time when we change, as well as discover who we are. And the author shows just that. Each of the characters goes through a journey in the book and the series, slowly discovering themselves and just what they stand for and how far they're willing to go to make change happen. For more info on the author, check out her Facebook page and website. Also check out the series Facebook page. There's no question about it, I give this book five stars!

This book added a particularly fun element to the series: the bold misconception that simply NOT WANTING A FRIEND TO DIE means you're desperately in love with them. Also random italics. Also directly quoting things from mere pages before, just in case you'd forgotten.

Honestly, I did actually enjoy this book, but only once I managed to switch off my brainspace. I do genuinely think this series is fun and worth a read, but it hurts me to think of how much better it easily could've been with a half-way decent editor.

Blech.

Series: Shadow Falls

What happened: Burnett, Lucas and Derek show up at her grandfather's place and tell her that Mario is back and it is safer back at shadow falls. So, she agrees to go back But then this girl named Jenny, who ends up being Hayden's sister shows up and tells her she has to leave then because the other elders don't plan on letting her leave. So, they escape and run into Derek who gets away with her. But they run into Mario and Lucas shows up and she almost kills him because of some trick Mario pulled on her. And then all the ghosts at the cemetery help her to get rid of Mario. Turns out Holiday is pregnant ahhh yaaaay. Kylie also meets her father's adoptive parents and John like threatens her mother which really worries Kylie. Kylie tells Derek that she isn't in love with him and doesn't want to date him and he tells her she has to promise to be his friend and actually talk to him about things. And she agrees. Lucas and her being working things out and she tells him that he has to find a way to get on the were council. And he does find a way through his grandma. Then his grandma dies and her ghost comes to Kylie and tells her that he needs her and they are part of each other's quest. So, she rushes to his grandmother's house and is able to comfort him, which makes him feel better. Kylie's ghost ends up being Mario's daughter-in law and when she looks at a picture of her on her wedding day she sees that Mario's son is the John that her mom is dating. She rushes off to John's house and proceeds to save her mom. John kills Mario and then Kylie kills him. So, they all tell her mom the truth and Kylie's real father helps in doing so and he tells Kylie that he is going to be a death angel now. And then Lucas gives Kylie like a promise ring and that makes me so happy. Oh oh oh also I forgot to mention Lucas didn't become engaged, he refused to sign the papers, because he didn't want to lose Kylie and he realized that he was wrong.

Quotes: "No, you're wrong. I didn't give her my soul. I lied. I couldn't have given her my soul. Because my soul was already given away. You took it when I was seven years old." His voice shook. "And if I had any of it left, you took the rest of it when you walked into Shadow Falls that first day. In the were culture, it's believed that there is only one soul mate. And you are mine, Kylie Galen, I knew that then, and it hasn't changed."
-Lucas

"Because, you fool, if he'd gone through with it, he'd have lost you. And whether you believe it or not, you are more important to him than getting on the Council. It's you that matters most to him."
-Fredericka about Lucas

"Call it a promise-a promise that when you do slip a ring on that finger…"He ran his hand down to her left hand. "That it'll be my ring."
-Lucas

Next Book: There will be a spin off series about Della out next year.

So, the end of the series.
It was good. Not great- but good. I probably enjoyed the books that led up to this one more, but the ending was unevietable. it had to come sometimes. I always feel that in the ending of a book series, the last book will either be absolutely fantastic (ex. the end of the Harry Potter series), or terrible (ex. the end of Maximum Ride). While this was good, the ending was meh. It was almost too...happy. The rest of the book was complete chaos, and you hit the end of the book, and now that everything that the main character has spent like 3 years freaking out over has disappeared within 30 pages, everything has just miraculously worked out.

Overall though, I really enjoyed this series, and while I'm a little sad that it's over, I'm glad that this story ended how it did. Thank you, C.C. Hunter!

I will definitely write a review about this book, but I'm too tired right now. So ... later! But I can already tell you that it's one of the worse books of the series. It's not something I'd call a "satisfying conclusion".
