“I found "The One from the Other" slightly difficult to get into at first. Set in post WWII Gemany it seemed to jump from the past to the present then back again.
But the more I read the deeper into the story I found myself and it turned out to be a good read.
Bernie Gunther is a private eye. Living in post war Germany he naturally has a lot of missing persons cases. When someone calling herself Britta Warzok employs him she simply wants to know if her husband, now a war criminal, is dead or alive as she wishes to remarry.
A straightforward enough case you might think. However, soon enough it appears that Bernie is embroiled in something a lot bigger then he imagined.
This book paints an interesting picture of the state of Germany after the second World War as well as being a great detective story. There are some scenes of violence that made me wince but Bernie's wry sense of humour offset that perfectly and made me want to keep on reading, the further I got the more threads got added to the story. It just kept turning corners til I didnt know where it was going to turn up. A lot better read than I had anticipated. I'll be reading more Philip Kerr in future for sure. :)”

I just can't get enough of the Bernie Gunther series. These are pretty dark, though, and I wouldn't jump in to the series with this one.

This one isn't a mystery in the same way as the earlier books; Bernie himself is at the center of the case. Some parts of the plot are predictable and unfold like a classical tragedy. Bernie also seems naive about human nature in a way that wasn't true in the earlier books. This sets up the next book well, while tying up loose ends in the final few pages.

Former Berlin PI Bernie Gunther, running his wife's family hotel near Dachau after the war, decides to get back into the PI business and is hired by a woman looking for confirmation that her husband, a former SS concentration camp commander, is dead. It is nice to read about Bernie again and while the plot in this book is not as believable as the previous books it was still a fascinating look at post war Germany.
