More like a 2.5. I love Adam Silvera but this book just wasn’t it for me. If it wasn’t written by Adam it would have been a DNF. I enjoyed the ending, despite it being super predictable, which bumped it from a 2 to a 2.5. I felt like I was reading a book where every generic fantasy trope was thrown together and a cover was slapped on it. Except that the world building was so confusing and didn’t really make sense - and I saw other reviews saying the same thing. I went through the majority of the book not understanding what was really going on in terms of the world building and how the difference in magic users led to all this conflict?? I’ll probably attempt the sequel when it comes out in hopes it’s somewhat better.

I have never been so excited to receive an ARC as I was to receive an ARC for Infinity Son, my most anticipated upcoming release. It is the book I have always dreamed about. A fantasy with powers, magical creatures, wands, unexpected plot twists, and more. A fantasy that gives me vibes of Charmed, Harry Potter, Buffy, superheroes, and everything else that defined my childhood. A fantasy that understands the importance of family and friendship in connection with independence. A fantasy full of queer characters who fully embrace their sexuality and no one is ever questioned. It is everything.

All in all, I enjoyed Infinity Son I found it a little bit slow to begin but it did eventually picked up. I liked Emil and Ness as characters but everyone else I found a bit annoying.
Brighton, in particular, was definitely the type of completely self-absorbed person I would NOT get along with. While it's clear he does love his family he never actually stops to consider the repercussions of his actions, he reminds me of Harry Potter but if he'd been in Slytherin instead. He has the same bull in a china shop methods but while Harry is almost always concerned with defeating Voldemort (for both personal and moral reasons) Brighton is just concerned about making himself more powerful and popular.
I liked the overarching story enough to read book two but I do think the ending was extremely predictable, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but worth noting.
I think it took a long time for the magic system to make sense, I would have liked just a bit more in-depth explanation. However, this could have been done on purpose so that more can be explored in book 2.
I loved the diversity in this book and I look forward to see how this might impact the future story - perhaps a potential romance between Ness and Emil?.
