More than living up to its status as the quintessential fantasy novel(s), my reading experience of The Lord of the Rings as an adult was simply beautiful. Here lies an entire, fully-realized world with four different languages, subcultures upon subcultures, and descriptions so detailed you can see yourself walking through the place. Here lies both epic battles against the overwhelming forces of darkness as well as the quiet, silent struggle of the individual, searching for any reason to go on in an increasingly bleaker environment. Here lies the classic tale of good and evil, the testament of how far even the smallest of us can go, one that never loses its purpose in the genuine grandeur of its setting. The Lord of the Rings is just perfect.

Oh man that was a hard slog. I first tried to read LOTR 18 years ago when the fellowship of the ring came out. I never finished it then. But now I have. Now I can say I have.

SECOND READ: Still a masterpiece, still one of my favourite books of all time. Unbelievable, flawed, foundational - it’s rare to find a book so brimming with creativity

FIRST READ: This book is one of those few books truly deserving of all of its accolades- I genuinely don’t think we can get on if you haven’t enjoyed Middle Earth at this point.
