There are a lot of walking, and considering the detailed description, you will hurt your legs while reading.

I bet it's been 30 years since I've read this book. And while I was all in when I was in high school, I found some of it to be little tedious, even as I probably understood a lot more of it with time. Still, the amount of worldbuilding that went into Middle Earth is staggering and admirable, and I really understood the adventures of Frodo and Sam (and the rest of the hobbits as well) and the whole saga as a reflection of Tolkien's Catholic faith in a way I never saw in high school. Frodo and Sam in particular are two of the best heroes in all of literature, taking on hard burdens out of a sense of duty. Not that they didn't grumble about it or were tempted to falter as we all due with crosses to bear, but they had a moral code that enabled them to always make the right decision when it counted. There's not too many classics that feature the triumph of the spirit over the forces of evil in such a profound and touching way.

2nd time reading this now - the 1st was nearly 15 years ago! So it almost felt like the first time again, but of course still familiar as I love the movies so much.

It is really a story to read, re-read and re-read. My absolute favourite series, just pure magic. It was really great to read in one book, though it gets hard to hold after long!

Reading the appendix of this edition was so fascinating to note just how in depth Tolkien went into creating this world - he created calendars, languages and histories for each of almost all the different races in his story.
