Oh, this was a lovely read! This was my first Heyer novel and I fear I might have been spoiled since I've heard this was one of her best work.

Sophy is a cheerful doer kind of character who barrels over everything and everyone in a grand show of a good time. From the summary I thought Charles - her love interest - would be overly stuffy and arrogant and who'd eventually be smoothed out into something nicer as the story moved along, but I was pleasantly surprised by the way Heyer portrayed him instead - he's clearly a kind man with a lot of love for his family and who doesn't begrudge a good time, but who is also bound not to show that very enjoyment due to his fiancée, and he's very well matched to Sophy's character indeed. Their family dynamics are also very well developed and it's very amusing to read!

The writing is lovely, though I had some difficulty getting into it on the first pages before the story truly began. Fair warning: there is one chapter with some uncomfortable antisemitism, as small of a scene as it may be.

So fun! A bit of jaunty joyride through madhap British upper-culture but it was fun and hilarious and Sophy was perhaps my favourite heroine. This was just a good time to read.

This was so enjoyable, our heroine is so intelligent, witty and likeable. The writing is wonderful and the plot is engaging. I could not ask more for a fictional regency read.
