I made 2 guesses throughout the book and I was wrong both times HAHA

It is really hard for me to read books this long, and I’m not sure if I only read it this fast because I was motivated by the new year. It was exciting though, and the switching between perspectives kept things interesting.
It was also really cool to find how the two main characters would “find” each other.

It was also soooo intense and messed up. An extremely dark book, but it did make me realize that I enjoyed thriller.

That said, the reward of the ending wasn’t satisfying enough to make up for the fact that it’s so long (for me). I’m also not super interested with reading the rest of the series; the book wrapped everything up really well so I’m not sure how the world building(?) would work after the first book. It was still enjoyable though!

The first half of the book is pretty slow as it is told in dual perspectives of Lisbeth, a genius hacker with photographic memory, and Mikael, a journalist. Once these two meet to investigate the Vanger families secrets, things really start to pick up. I watched the movie right after and it was a great experience. The movie didn't include much dialogue so reading the book before helped me to understand the scenes as it was almost the same. Lisbeth ridiculously girlbosses and I love her character but some. of the things she goes through are slightly concerning so please check trigger warnings if you are easily triggers by certain contents.

Complex characters and well-developed mystery

It seems everyone has read this novel from nearly a decade ago except me.  Now, I finally caught up and I am so glad I did.

Blomkvist is a journalist and was recently sentenced for slander.  While awaiting his jail time, he is contacted by the patriarch of the wealthy Vangar family to solve a 30-year-old mystery.  He is teamed up with Lisabeth Salandar for the case.

This is a slow-burn mystery with deep character development.  The start is a bit slow at first, but stick with it -- the details at the beginning which seem unnecessary all come together at the end.  You also receive many details on Lisabeth's past that don't move the plot along, but really help the reader understand her actions.

If you are looking for a fast-paced thriller, this is not the book for you at this time.  If you are looking for a very well-developed plot with twists and turns and complex characters - read on!  This is one of the best suspense/mystery books I have read for quite a while.  Why did I wait so long!!!

This book added great mystery and suspense into the main storyline. The book investigates the disappearance of Harriet Vanger in Stockholm, the niece of a wealthy businessman Henrik Vanger. The investigation is led by Michel Blomkvist - an investigative journalist. To assist him, Blomkvist he employs Lisbeth Salander, a high tech security hacker to acquire knowledge and history about each of the suspects.

The chapters follow different points of view from the main characters in the book, Blomkvist, the suspects involved and Lisbeth Salander.

A book with a fascinating main mystery, with clear and direct prose that makes the clues and their implications easy to understand. However, the subplots in the novel, such as the character Lisbeth's struggle against her ward and the drama surrounding the protagonist's financial magazine, aren't nearly as captivating. The direct prose and dialogue becomes dry in these segments, and there are some disturbing aspects to Lisbeth's story that would change nothing if they were removed. Lisbeth did not need much to establish that she's hardcore, yet the book goes to some unnecessary lengths to make that impression.
