The mystery in this book didn't pull me in like I hoped it would. The writing style wasn't for me either - it felt like big parts filled with exposition followed by big parts filled with dialogue and it never felt cohesive. Not to mention the typical male protagonist written by a man who every woman can't help but want to sleep with.

A book with a fascinating main mystery, with clear and direct prose that makes the clues and their implications easy to understand. However, the subplots in the novel, such as the character Lisbeth's struggle against her ward and the drama surrounding the protagonist's financial magazine, aren't nearly as captivating. The direct prose and dialogue becomes dry in these segments, and there are some disturbing aspects to Lisbeth's story that would change nothing if they were removed. Lisbeth did not need much to establish that she's hardcore, yet the book goes to some unnecessary lengths to make that impression.

given the blunt and investigative nature of the writing, the story really found its stride during the chunks dedicated to the Harriet Vanger's disappearance, but was very stunted emotionally, making it harder to enjoy the  main characters, who make up the heart of this mystery and counterbalance the graphic and disturbing topics being scrutinized in the book
