The novel starts with Marra, the main character, wiring dog bones together in order to complete the second task the the dust-wife gave her. Then, for about three chapters, there are splits where it swaps from the past of Marra's sister Damia being wed to Prince Vorling and dying, before her other sister Kania is wed. Eventually, Marra realizes the dark truth and leaves to find the dust-wife.

One thing about this book is that it had parts that went unutilized or parts that felt dry: the blistered land and saints vengeful over broken taboo, the goblin market, the fact that Marra magically made a dog of bones come to life.

The characters felt rather flushed out and Marra slowly learned to find her inner strength and her trust in others. The dust-wife was oddly snarky and often, along with her demon hen, added comedy to the story.
Fenris had undying loyalty after Marra saved him from the market. Arles was lovable and the perfect example of someone so good she refused to use her dark magic.

My favorite quote from this book is "I've done many things that were terribly important, lives hanging in the balance and so on and so forth. There is something pleasant about chopping wood. If I miss a stroke, nothing awful happens." I feel like this quote really highlights the stressing standards that some people face, and shows how it is important to sometimes take a step back and relax.

This book had quite a few insightful quotes, but also quite a few funny lines.

The plot was slower than I expected it to bed and there were parts where, as I said earlier, a certain bit could have been utilized.
For example, the jar of moonlight which was barely featured in the book despite being the third impossible task. Also, all it did was glow. On the bright side, it showed some of the dust-wife's character.

A list of words I learned from this novel are: Charnel, Dotage, Querulous, Awl, Palanquin, Abacus, Leper, Genuflecting, Aquiline, Lacquer, Banal, and Geas.

Another amazing quote from this book is one that really shows Marra's character growth:
"You are not so big. You are only a living king. I saw an old woman defeat a dead one. You can not hurt me any worse than spinning thread of nettle wool, and you cannot confuse me anymore that the palace of dust. Even you cruelty is small compared to the blistered land."

Overall, I would say this is a good book for people who like characters that feel mostly real and a woman slowly discovering her self worth.

4☆: I enjoyed this and would recommend it.

Edit:
My General 4.5 Stars / This book has well-rounded characters that have clear-cut personalities and roles. The worldbuilding was congruent throughout the book. The direction that the plot went and the conclusion was realistic. The book paced well. However, something was missing or did not quite make sense. I loved this book, but it wasn’t quite worth five stars.

Would be great for a Greta Gerwig adaptation featuring Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh. Big on yearn-core.

I decided to pick up Nettle & Bone because it won the 2023 Hugo. It's a dark book, but I enjoyed it, and I can see why it won the Hugo. It was maybe a bit too dark for me, personally. But I enjoyed it overall.

A very warm read. The (light spoiler)
domestic abuse
plot and hints of otherwordly evil keep it from being quite tame, but the joy is in watching our misfit bunch of heroes' successes unfold rather than any particular tension over whether they will or if it will come at a great cost.

The fairytale magic is described with great visual detail, managing to wring new charm from timeless concepts like wise-women and a goblin market. Our heroine also brings a fresh coat of paint to the classic underestimated-royalty-on-a-quest character by being thirty years old, 'round', and having relatable insecurities. My surprise favourite, however, was the second old wise-woman that joined the party. Over the course of the final act, she shows nuance and power that left my initial estimate of her as an irritating mother-hen looking woefully short-sighted.

I was left wanting a little on the fronts of the demon chicken and
expecting the cloak to come in clutch at the end as a mark of Marra's contribution to their victory
but ending was still pleasantly satisfactory without.

Nettle & Bone was a curious book in many ways. Despite the fact that I gave it four stars, I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about it. I might edit this review one day when my feelings become clearer (but don't hold your breath on that one).

Let me say one thing - the writing is excellent. It's crisp, sharp and elegant. T. Kingfisher is clearly an old pro at this style, and not a word is wasted. I also really appreciated how Kingfisher takes common fairy tale tropes and uses them in ways that are alternately hilarious and profound. The female characters in this book are all incredibly strong, courageous and intelligent, but each of them expresses these qualities differently.

The issues I had may have had a lot to do with the time I took to finish it, despite its relatively short length. The pace was definitely slower than I would have liked, and there were times when the phrasing was just a little too cryptic and philosophical for my taste - I want to be intrigued, not confused!

Overall, this was a well-written, thought-provoking fantasy, but I wish it could have moved at a slightly faster pace.

The story was delightful. The characters were interesting and lovable and I'm a little sad to leave them now that I've finished the book.

This author never fails for me! Such a unique, complex take on the classic fantasy quest. Less romance-y than the other books I’ve read from her but no less delightful. The typical T. Kingfisher formula: spooky and a little bit horrifying threaded with humour and underpinned by kindness and hope. Loved it.
