This was super cute, if it had been a little better written I would have given it 4 stars. I am a sucker for humorous victorian fantasy and this one did not disappoint on that count. There is just the tiniest bit of steampunk but its hardly noticeable. Im looking forward to the rest of this series!

Undoubtedly one of the best of the Alternative Victorian England books. Not really Steampunk; it is more Magical with a splash of technology. Great nuanced characters - it was nice to see a book with a female protagonist where the male characters weren't cliches or one dimensional. Excellent plot, a little bit of a Whodoneit. Worth a read.

What a wonderful, unique take on magic. I loved the world building and the steady pace of the plot. The characters were very well developed and the world felt realistic. I particularly liked that Sarah was not an instant prodigy, for all of her unexpected talent. Definitely an author I would read again.

Hello my loves ! I’m back with another book review.

First of all, I want to thank NetGalley for allowing me to read this lovely book.

Let’s get into it!

This story takes place in a world where magical people, the Guardians, rule over non-magical people, the Snipes. Snipes have to serve a Guardian family for life to earn their keep.

The story centers on Sarah Smith and her family, who work for the Winters. Sarah has been a very frail and sick child. Until one day, its discovered that Sarah can do magic.

She then takes on a new persona and new life and is sent to a magical school for girls, where she learns to control her powers.

It’s a book about friendship, love and justice.

Sarah…
Sarah aka Cassandra is such a good character. I really liked her. Even though she is living this alternate life where she is supposed to be this really good witch and be a member of the high-class, she still manages to stay true to herself and her values.

…and her friends
I loved the friendships in this book. They’re so wholesome and cute. Her friends have been through so much in their lives and they’re still so nice and warm towards Sarah, even when they find out that she’s basically been lying to them.

The Plot Twist
OMG! I did not see that coming. I thought she was Sarah's only friend.Turns out I was wrong.

My opinion
This was really good book, with really cute interesting characters, a love interest that didn’t consume and completely blind the MC (thank god) ,really cute friendship and super interesting family dynamics.

I think everyone should read it.

I can’t wait for the next book.

I gave this book 4/5 ⭐

That is all for today. I’m sorry it took so long to post this, but I’m lazy.

Have a lovely day and I’ll see you soon!

Interesting, but needs work

Copy I read clearly needed an editor - repeated passages and confusing scenes abounded. That said, the novel wasn't bad. YA boarding school fantasy, alt history with an obvious love triangle setup. Nothing new, but diverting enough.

This book was simply so entertaining. Thats what I enjoyed the most about it. I never wanted to put it down! I saw another review on Goodreads say she got Harry Potter and Charmed vibes which are 2 really good examples of how enjoyable this was. I loved the boarding school atmosphere.
