| Favorite Quote | On the whole, booksellers dislike librarians. To realise a good price for a book, it has to be in decent condition, and there is nothing librarians like more than taking a perfectly good book and covering it with stamps and stickers before – and with no sense of irony – putting a plastic sleeve over the dust jacket to protect it from the public.

| My Review | Bookstores to book lovers often hold a rose-tinted mystique about them, and many, like myself, have dreamt of working in one. I knew going in that any retail job has its ups and downs, but this book really paints a vivid picture of just how up and down it can go! The rude customers alone were enough to put that bookselling dream to rest.

While I enjoyed reading Bythell’s diary style memoir, I found that the entries seemed to blend into one other. I guess that rings true to life. Not all days are exciting and action packed, and the gentle monotony does have its own charm to it. I’m sure some readers will find this as a plus!

I recommend this to all book lovers juggling with the idea of quitting their jobs and starting over in a bookstore. Give this a read, and see if you change your mind. Who knows, maybe you'll think it’s still worth it after all!

Oh, and I am definitely putting this bookstore on my bucket list :)

The structure of each entry really helps portray the monotony of the work but Bythell's clever and sarcastic observations make it worth reading.
