Have you ever dreamed of having your own bookshop? If yes then this book is a must read if you love books. Set out in Diary format Shaun Bythell with his deeply sardonic sense of humour journals the highs and lows of second hand book selling. Theres a real sense of community, quirky employees and a bookshop cat. This is charming as well as an education. Whats not too love. I wish I lived in Wigtown.
I absolutely love these books and wish there could be a yearly edition. They’d make great reading for the time between Christmas and New Year when you want to be cozy at home. I loved learning about the used book business, and each month always mentions a few books that add to my TBR pile. The folks that populate Wigtown are interesting and you get a great feeling for village life. I hope I get to The Bookshop one day and while there, I promise to not ask for a discount, hum, whistle, or make a bother of myself.
It is a little ironic that I read this book on a Kindle given that hatred of Amazon is repeating theme in the book. The author even shoots a kindle to make point.
Sean the author is owns a barely surviving bookshop in a remote town of Scotland. The book is written as 365 diary entries about the life in a small town bookshop. It is an uplifting and charming book. I am jealous of the luxury of taking a day off for fishing, hiking, sailing which Sean seems to enjoy.
The book reminded me a lot of "A Shepards Life"

Shaun Bythell owns The Bookshop, Wigtown - Scotland's largest second-hand bookshop. It contains 100,000 books, spread over a mile of shelving, with twisting corridors and roaring fires, and all set in a beautiful, rural town by the edge of the sea. A book-lover's paradise? Well, almost! In these wry and hilarious diaries, Shaun provides an inside look at the trials and tribulations of life in the book trade, from struggles with eccentric customers to wrangles with his own staff, who include the ski-suit-wearing, bin-foraging Nicky. He takes us with him on buying trips to old estates and auction houses, recommends books (both lost classics and new discoveries), introduces us to the thrill of the unexpected find, and evokes the rhythms and charms of small-town life, always with a sharp and sympathetic eye.
