Strangely mesmerising and addictive because of the mundanity of many of the entries. It made me laugh too and reminded me of happy days spent in my Dad's bookshop. Customers really can be that daft. Not quite 4 stars - I have to know I'd recommend it for that rating, and I'm not sure I would to many people. I also found myself worrying that the people the author was being so rude about would read it - I don't suppose he cares in the slightest but I didn't like him very much!

I understand what this book was trying to do but it just isn't for me. It is literally a booksellers diary where he recounts events from his day, and while they can be interesting nothing compelled me to keep reading. It is light, relaxing and well-written and maybe I'll come back another time. I tried going out of my comfort zone with a memoir but sadly it didn't really work.

Thought it was something like the lost bookshop, or the story collector but it was ok.

Was a nice reminder of day to day struggles of a shop owner.

But literally was a diary for a year. Ins and outs and discuss with customers. Disappointing viewpoint of main chatacter(author) frustrated me reading it.

Truth.
Businesses should provide a service. If they don’t provide a good enough service. They don’t do well.
And… human connection, experience and interaction is what people crave for in books… so help facilitate that.

What of it
Nice reminder of positive energy I’d rather bring to our own business, and remember the importance of books

Absolutely loved this. Shaun Bythell has such a dry, charming wit that is so hilarious, but then he sprinkles his words with moments of sentimentality that hit even harder for the absurd customer interactions and humor that sandwich them. Reading this almost made me want to own a bookstore lol because it seems like he has time to do anything he wants! I think there are more of these and I'm looking forward to reading them all.

One day, I'll go visit The Book Shop myself for sure!!!
