I really wanted to like this book but it somehow got weirder but also more boring. SA and pregnancy being the two biggest plot points also really isn't for me.

I liked it and I was confused. That could be my fault. I thought the writing style was great I just wanted more from some of the characters.

My only complaint is that this book should be longer. It’s fantastic, but the ending felt rushed. At the same time, that rush almost makes sense. I was being entertained, I wanted it to keep going, I get why it stopped where it did but do I wish it hadn’t? Do I wish it had expanded on the characters thought process that led to her decisions? Am I just being greedy for more? It’s the kind of book that’s going to stick with me and make me wonder over and over if I like it or not, which I think is fantastic. Does make it very difficult to rate though, there’s every chance I’ll come back and change that as I reflect on it more.

It was a wonderfully written Southern Gothic, although I didn't actually like it very much. Everyone in this book is several layers of messed up. Everyone hurts each other—and gets hurt in return—because of their issues. It's a novel exploring black womanhood in regards to poverty, sexuality, and racism with a whole lot of macabre moments thrown in.
