I have no idea what the plot of this book was. They end up right where they started and nothing of substance actually happened. I felt like I was reading badly written smut with stereotypical characters that had no real weight to them. The characters weren’t fully fleshed out or likable in anyway. There was something archaic about the descriptions in this book, which painted an older time period, but apparently it’s modern day. This book made no sense and I do not see what the “point” of this story was, because entertainment certainly wasn’t.

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around this book. I mean, I'm not sure what I just read, but yet I'm exactly sure what I just read. First and foremost, this book has some truly strange elements in it. I mean, why does an owner of a funeral home need a model?? I have to say this is a completely original albeit bizarre idea for a storyline. Good thing is I really like bizarre. There are some pretty explicit consensual sex scenes. I cannot stand sex scenes in a book that do not add to the actual story. Gratuitous sex for the sake of gratuitous sex annoys the hell out of me. I can say in this story, it did give you more insight into Magnolia. AND the sex scenes are not long and drawn out. So it fits. I'm sure some readers will feel like the sex scenes were completely unnecessary. I saw it as more of an explanation of how messed up Magnolia truly was.

I would not say the characters were lovable by any means, but they were interesting. Eden the alcoholic aunt, Cotton the supposed clairvoyant owner of the funeral home, and Magnolia, the young woman who just lost her grandma and really doesn't have the tools to be an independent adult.

I felt like it was a commentary on the disparity between the haves and the have nots. What one person will do to survive and how fucked up those survival skills are. It all makes for an odd book that I could not put down as I needed to know what would happen. I felt the writing was great. I loved the author's descriptions. This is going to be a book that you love, or you don't get it at all and completely hate it. I really enjoyed it and days later I'm still thinking about it. I did feel the ending was really rushed, but I would definitely read more by this author.

I really wanted to like this book but it somehow got weirder but also more boring. SA and pregnancy being the two biggest plot points also really isn't for me.

It was a wonderfully written Southern Gothic, although I didn't actually like it very much. Everyone in this book is several layers of messed up. Everyone hurts each other—and gets hurt in return—because of their issues. It's a novel exploring black womanhood in regards to poverty, sexuality, and racism with a whole lot of macabre moments thrown in.
