I never got to read this in school so I’m happy to be able to read it with my own child many years later

A good yarn. Darker than most kid lit. It explored the concepts of life, death and purpose in a broad but gentle way. I wish I'd read this book when I was young; it would have given my morbid little self a lot to think about.

I needed a nice easy book to read. This was exactly that. I loved the writing style. I think the Tucks were so likable and the setting was tranquil.

It was so deeply nostalgic to reread this! This book is so beautiful, beautifully written, and deeply emotional.
I find the romance between Winnie and Jesse to be uncomfortable and unnecessary.

What a lovely little book! I think there's room here for more, but I still really liked it as is. Love the toad. Even with such a short space Miles manages to be such a real, tragic character. Summer itself feels like a character and really lends a certain something to the magical feel of the story. Wish I'd read this when I was a kid!

Subconscious inspiration for Stephenie Meyer? Perhaps...

Another reading requirement for the course I teach. It is one of my favorite books. It was wonderful when I read it as a kid and I loved it just as much as an adult. Pure magic, wonderful writing. Sooooooo good!!!

The most beautiful story I have ever read. If you have seen the movie that does NOT count- you must read this incredible book for yourself.
