FANTASTIC. Simple yet excellent writing. Had me laughing, gasping, and wondering about a simpler time. If you’ve read Glass Castle, this paints a great picture of how Rosemary Walls got to be how she is. Very slice-of-life-y (someone compared it to Laura Ingalls Wilder for grownups). This quote sums it up best:

“I became known as Lily Casey, the mustang-breaking, poker-playing, horse-race-winning schoolmarm of Coconino County, and it wasn't half bad to be in a place where no one had a problem with a woman having a moniker like that.”

May every woman be a Lily Casey.

This is my first Jeannette Walls book, and I absolutely loved her writing! I don’t think Lily Casey and I would have gotten along — mostly due to some dramatic political and ethical differences — and it’s hard for me to divorce my qualms with her beliefs (which were probably pretty liberal for the time period,) from the ethics of the books itself. Either way, she certainly was a hell of a woman who died with an inspiring amount of stories.
