I dont know how to describe this paedophilic, semi-incestuous coming of age story. Not a lot of people liked ilustrations but I quite enjoyed the simplicity of it and muted colors. But the story itself was lackluster. It plays on the idea of lonelines and not fitting in a delicate age where you both wanna play with Pokemons and kiss a girl. And I get that. However, to see kids in some serious oral action is too much for my mind. Again, it comes down to the age of characters and its discrepancy. If it were two 16 YO's Id be fine and conclude we tend to seek intimacy and belonging through physical love. But Im more than interested in other authors peices, hopefully they are not as gunky!

“A Sister.” Pretty interesting coming-of-age graphic novel about a young boy learning to come to grips with growing up & hormones. Now the story can get a little uncomfortable at times as 13 year old Antoine & 16 year old Hélène start to become close during a summer they spend together. Contrary to the title, Hélène is NOT Antoine’s sister. Just a daughter of his mother’s friend who comes to visit. Good story, but viewer discretion advised.

Belle lecture!

An interesting story about sexual awakening and first romance

Key words: graphic novel, romance, sexual awakening, young adult, teenagers, fiction

Really interesting. This graphic novel is hard to categorise. I think the title is really misleading because I was expecting something about sisterhood or the lack of it but instead, it was mostly about the sexual awakening of Antoine, the main character. It is well written but due to the title, I always kind of saw Helene as a sort of sister teaching stuff to Antoine but not the kind of stuff you expect from a sister.
Apart from that, if you forget the title, it is actually a very good graphic novel. The drawings in black and white are really nice and expressive. If you analyse it a little bit, you’ll see that faces are not often drawn, only when there are some emotions to convey. You should know that there are some explicit scenes. It’s quite a cute story between Helene and Antoine. There are no useless elements in this story, it’s not redundant. I think boys will prefer this graphic novel because it is more relatable for them. I recommend it to everyone because it is still an interesting story.

So, I went into this thinking I was going to get a sweet coming of age story about a 13 year old boy falling for a 16 year old girl, with maybe some awakening sexual feelings happening, because, you know, adolescent boy. I did get this; the boy, Antoine, goes with his parents and younger brother Titi to the family's summer cottage at the beach, as they do every summer. One morning, he wakes up and there's a person in the spare bed in the room, Helene, the daughter of a family friend who has come to visit for a week. The two become fast friends, she flirts as young almost-women do, testing out their sexuality and attractiveness, and he develops a crush on her. She hangs out with Antoine, sometimes doing the tame, friendly things like working on a jigsaw puzzle or drawing, sometimes bringing him along to hang out with the teen boys she's met on the beach, including him in her rebelliousness of smoking and drinking. If the story stopped there, it would be a bittersweet story of the aches and pains of growing up and finding first love. However, it did not stop there. We also get graphic sexual acts, not the actual deed, but oral sex and mutual masturbation are shown, and it felt uncomfortable and icky to see it. It feels kinda pedo, a bit forced, and really didn't need to be there, the story would've lost nothing if these scenes weren't included. It also felt off in that I remember being a 16 year old girl, and there's just no way I would've been interested enough in a 13 year old boy to do sex stuff with him. I'm sure that some people would think I'm over-reacting, that it's normal for kids to experiment, and while I agree with that, I don't need or want to see it. So, what would've been a 4 star read for me became a 2 star read, but YMMV. I did like the art style, it's soft and dreamy, in sepia tones that evoke a feeling of memories.
