Perfectly pleasant cozy-type mystery, which takes place in the ’70s and stars an old-fashioned professor at a small American agricultural college. I liked Professor Shandy’s quiet wit and general oddness, and MacLeod manages to deliver at least one deliciously creepy image. This was a rec from Wychwood, and I can see why she enjoys the series; if I stumbled across any of MacLeod’s other books at a library sale, I’d probably snatch them up. However, this wasn’t memorable enough that I’ll be actively and desperately seeking them out.

Much fun. Insta-love, ugh, but whatever. Balaclava Agricultural College is definitely a very interesting place. This series ought to be read in order. I'd read the second before I picked this up and it spoiled this one.

Cute! Fluffy! Beautifully written!

I suspect it would be possible to overdose, so I am being careful to spread them out, but I enjoyed this one as a lovely read on a vacation day.

Charlotte MacLeod's books are in the Kindle unlimited program, so I thought I would try them. The are light and humorous murder mysteries, great for when I need a change of pace.

I keep trying to fill my Holmes/Poirot void with new-to-me old mysteries. And yet I'm never as satisfied...

Peter Shandy is a college professor who lives on Crescent Row, a street the college decorates and centers its Christmas festivities around. Normally he doesn't decorate but after being pester by his neighbor, Mrs. Ames, he finally go overs the top and then immediately leaves. Feeling guilty, he returns to his house to find Mrs. Ames dead.

I liked Shandy as an amateur detective: unlike some he wasn't doing it out of nosiness but because he was trouble by what the police investigating were missing. He actually reminded me of Monk than Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot.

But the mystery itself was just average as was the writing and characters. Nothing stood out to me.

Found the book a little hard to get into in the beginning but things did get moving and in the end, it turned out to be a good read. Professor Shandy is a "detective" I've never encountered before in other mysteries and I grew to like this quirky, old-fashioned, and witty character.
