What Moves the Dead was a perfectly enjoyable novella that I finished in a day. I liked it well enough, and particularly liked the fact that the protagonist was nonbinary, but I was never really wowed by the story at any point. I accurately guessed what was likely happening from the first few chapters and so the horror never felt truly creepy to me despite some nice turns of phrase and scary imagery. There's a longer version of this story that could've made a bigger impact on me had we seen more of the characters, but this was not that story. I greatly liked the nonbinary representation and the time we spent with the cast, but ultimately, it was nothing memorable as a piece of horror.

I DEVOURED this book on a rare day off. Like an animal. And I [censored] loved it. I have loved EAP since I was 8, and this scratched an itch I didn't realize I still had. I loved how the author brought in a discussion of new pronouns, gave them valuable and compelling cultural context, and then also made it relevant to the horror!! Wow. Wow. Loved it. The writing style was very Poe meets Doyle meets 2015 Tumblr user and it was absolutely perfect. The science and horror melded perfectly. I'm going to be a freak about this book for some time.
