took me some time to get into but a heart wrenching and humbling memoir

Book club. Heart-wrenching story of immigration told through the eyes of the child who lived it. Fear, racism, poverty - a terrible trifecta.

A both heartbreaking and hopeful portrayal of the life of new undocumented immigrants in America. It was shocking for me to see this side of my country that I know nothing about. Qian’s resilience is incredible through all of her childhood trauma. I wish the book continued or there would be a follow up on her life once they move to Canada.

A beautifully written book, captivating from the first page. At times both heartbreaking and humorous, the story weaves its way through conflicting emotions of belonging and resistance.
