Libby audio. BOTM and Read With Jenna selection. Chinese immigration story.
I read this is one day. I don’t often put everything on hold to do this but I was so taken in by this book that I did.
As an immigrant to this country, though from a different country, I identified with so many parts of this book.
I didn’t work in a sweatshop or experience hunger, but reading the author’s experience, I felt like I was sitting in that class with her. It makes me think of all the kids sitting in classes hungry. How can we expect them to learn?
Adding errors to your writing assignments so you don’t get called a cheater by your teacher? Yup, I’ve been there.
I could go on with specific examples but this review would be far too long.
If you’re interested in learning about the immigrant experience, read this.
This is going in my list of recommendations for a cultural competence book club I advise. I will also be recommending it to our social determinants of health book group because the first hand accounts of health issues would be educational for the health professionals in the group!

This was one of my favorite books I read in 2022 and I'd recommend it for just about anyone.
My only criticism is that I wish the whole memoir was as passionate and compelling as the final chapter. But I recognize that isn’t entirely possible due to the previous chapters being primarily about her childhood. Further, the book might be better enjoyed read as opposed to listened to.

My own childhood bears the scars of the cruelty of US immigration policy and so much of this book rang true. I read this book and just kept wondering why we think of the US as the greatest nation. We have so much to learn about the depths of our society’s depravity. This isn’t a book to read to feel grateful about your own luck. You read it so that it opens your eyes to the reality of what goes on just beneath the surface. And the only reason we get to read this is that Qian clawed her way up and out, but think of how many more of these stories exist and belong to those who didn’t/couldn’t. I’m grateful Qian was willing to pull back the curtain but also heartbroken for and ashamed of how little I have done for her and others experiencing what she did.
