Strange pacing, goes very slow in the darker sections covering elementary school and events just after the family arrives in the US and then abruptly everyone lives happily ever after.  But interesting and eye-opening in the sense that I didn’t realize sweatshops, etc still exist.

What a beautiful, heartbreaking, and eye-opening memoir. I feel like this should be required reading in high school, so some kids would learn compassion and not to judge a book by its cover. Thank you, Qian, for being so raw and open and honest with us about your experiences.

Happy to have finally read this as #AAPI heritage month comes to a close. This was a powerful story about struggle and perseverance after a Chinese family immigrated to New York City. Beautiful Country is a window into the life of an undocumented child living in poverty who is determined to reach her full potential.

This was mostly focused on her childhood up through primary education. I would love to read more about her journey through secondary education, law school and her path to becoming an education/civil rights lawyer.

Poignant and powerful. Loved the elements of indentity

I don’t know how to write a review of this book. Every US born citizen needs to read this book. I am completely serious. The writing is perfect, conversational. The information is raw and honest. I just want to thank the author for the work she put into this.
