I didn’t expect to like this as much as I did! The ending definitely wasn’t what I wanted but it is what it is. Can’t wait to see the movie based on this

I enjoyed this far more than I was expecting to, despite figuring out the big twist early on. It was well written, genuinely spooky at times (had me looking out my dark window multiple times, lol) and the characters were well flushed out.

It read like an M. Night Shyamalan movie, so I'm excited to see the film when it comes out.

A fantastically creepy, chilling story.  It's a great one of you want something thrilling without gore ir body horror.  I really love a modern book that adds in twists of folk lore. Some things in the plot you can see a mile off but it does not negate from the fantastic story.

⚠️ TW: parental death, child abuse, PTSD ⚠️ If you're looking for a spine chilling read for spooky season that gives you the perfect mix of supernatural and psychological horror then this one is for you! This book follows Mina who during a trip to make some quick cash and help out a friend breaks down and ends up stranded in the remote countryside of Ireland at the edge of an uncharted forest. But little does she know this sinister forest has a dark history and she's about to come face to face with it when she realises she has no other choice but to leave her car to get help. And just as she sets off she hears a woman shouting and urging her to run to a concrete bunker deep in the forest but once the door slams shut behind her the entire building is besieged by screams. She then comes to find herself in a room built of glass with a light that only comes on at nightfall when creatures known as the watchers come above ground to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time. This book is incredibly gripping, eerie and claustrophobic and definitely not one you want to read at night. Throughout reading it you can't help but feel jumpy and have that paranoid feeling that you're being watched. It is so well written with multiple pov's from the different characters that just make it so binge worthy as well as having some great twists. The only reason I dropped it down a star is because the ending felt slightly rushed. Overall though, I highly recommend this read!

The writing was lovely but a bit sparse, which I think works for the theme. I thought the characters were decently fleshed out for a horror story. A lot of times newer authors will simply make placeholders to kill off for shock value or sympathy points.

I did appreciate how
all the male characters died. Thank you for the self awareness about horror tropes.
I think this was refreshing to see in a horror novel.

I can't say I appreciated the ending. It disrupted the pacing and I thought it was abrupt in a good way, but perhaps not well executed. In a way that's kinda the whole book. It feels unintentionally off balance. There's plenty mystery about the main location, their daily life, but the how's and why's of the 'antagonist' is barely touched upon. I wish there was a little more information on the
faerie, monsters, changeling, whatever the hell was the creatures and WHY they were bound there and what was the doorway?
I finished the book thinking this was a duology or series, but I didn't notice such a thing mentioned.

I wouldn't mind reading whatever the author publishes next. They are skilled enough to put together a cohesive story with an interesting, fairly unique folk tale twist.
