this book is correct in it's sprawling confusing upsetting representation of grief. but i just found it hard to follow - which was the point i know, but i still didn't necessarily enjoy it. I can't help but think reading this in the original Italian would be better. i liked Leo. this reminded me a lot of Queer (2024) in some ways... hot climate, travelling, older man, younger man, pining, and both about heavy heavy grief. I liked how Tondelli made it clear that Thomas and Leo were indeed made for each other. the grief Leo was feeling was accurate to their relationship's intensity, no matter how unconventionally it was conducted. sometimes books are like 'oh yeah they loved each other but they were a bit toxic and shouldn't have really loved each other' but this book was like 'they loved each other and they were toxic but they were literally soulmates'.
this lost me completely in the middle. maybe i just wasnt really in the right mood either, i haven't been reading as much as i should and this is a hard book i think. but i still enjoyed.

Beautiful writing and it was interesting how the author interposed memories, stories, dreams concurrently. There was a lot explained, but a lot left unexplained that left me wanting to know a little more. I did not finish feeling much about the characters: likability or even understanding them that well.

I really wanted to love this book but it never happened. I’m not sure if the pull and adoration for this story was lost in translation but it felt never-ending due to its non-linear style.
