One of my favourite books and the best account on WW2 that I've read so far. Cornelius Ryan has written this book based on his interviews with the war veterans, so the outcome is a first hand account from the battlefield.
My favourite character is Erwin Rommel, the German Field Marshal, who was behind the defences of the Western Wall. He was an exceptional war strategist and respected even by the Allies. Ryan gives us a view from both sides, the Allies as well as the Germans, their thought processes, their commands, their reactions to the situations around them. He also throws in incidents unknown to the world but common in every battle. E.g. when a paratrooper landed in a German military courtyard and nonchalantly walked off, or when two units from either side walked into each other suddenly and were so stunned that they simply walked their ways instead of firing.
The Longest Day is a must read for every war enthusiast and history lover.

It is worth your read. The author does a fantastic job of telling the story of D-Day through eyewitness accounts. Although it is all history, it is very easy to read.
