I am speechless at how disturbing this book is and how absolutely disgusting the imagery was, but if that’s not what you’re expecting going into extreme horror then you should not read this. Some of the content in this book had me glued in shock with a twisted stomach. The mc’s disdain for humanity and dry sense of humor was redeemably funny so I found that to be the most entertaining part of my experience reading this. I can’t really say I enjoyed this book because it was so fucked up but I was still extremely curious where the story was going to go.

Chuck Palahniuk did it better. This is just a gross, desperate story.

This book isn’t gonna be for everyone.

This book isn’t gonna be for most people.

It’s a splatterpunk book.

It’s not high art.

Splatterpunk is gross, it’s disturbing, it’s over the top, and sometimes (most of the time, if we’re being 100% honest) it’s poorly written.

Once you accept the fact that most of the novels in this genre read like the ramblings of a 16-year-old edgelord with access to a lapua they become significantly easier to digest.

Anywayyy, let's get into this review 👀

I appreciate that Morrison doesn’t try to convince you that the lead of this tale (or really anyone that has the misfortune of being a character in this mess) is redeemable in any way, shape or form. You can hate the characters all you want, because in the end it doesn’t really matter how you feel about any of them. Especially the male lead.

The lead (because of course our mysterious corpse fondler is nameless) is boring. His introduction is comical, and his descriptions of his elicit rendezvous are bizarrely poetic, but my god…this man is a snooze fest we he isn’t cock deep in a dead cheerleader. His taste in music and literature is so cliche it hurts. Of course he reads Poe. Of course he listens to Ministry. He doesn’t evolve much within the story, and any change that he experiences is immediately thrown out the window as soon as the climax of the story hits.

Surprisingly, Helen proves to be a far more interesting character (imo) then the male lead. She experiences shame. She knows that what she’s doing is perverse and disgusting. She even has a somewhat interesting backstory. But ultimately, she goes nowhere, much like the male lead.

The plot of this book is shallow, but the first 50 pages are far more engaging than most of the spatterpunk books I’ve read recently. They keep you interested. Helen and the male lead’s banter is goofy, considering the context of most of their conversions is about death and rejecting normalcy. But
once Helen gets knocked up the pacing hits a wall and the uncomfortable conversations become long paragraphs about the boring leads boring thoughts 🙄.

I didn’t really like the twist at the end, and I could have gone without the inclusion of the scumbag businessman husband. I knew Helen was going to die. I knew the baby would just end up being used as a grotesque plot device. But like I said earlier, I appreciate that the author didn’t try to convince the reader that any of the characters in this book are redeemable.
Everyone sucks. No one wins.

Overall, I didn’t think this was a bad book. I don’t know if I’ll pick it up again any time soon, but it’s earned a place in my horror collection. At least until I find a spatterpunk novel that takes its place.

This book is for sure not for the faint of heart.
I did enjoy the story but it is a Splatter punk book.
That ending was amazing.

Absolutely hilarious and gripping. This was my first extreme horror book and I loved every moment of it. The main character is so terrible and yet so fun and oddly relatable and I would pick this book up again.

First time reading an insanely gorey, published book. Necrophiliac hospital security guard has a weird relationship with a canabalistic head maternity doctor. Interesting view into their fucked up world. Couldn't in good conscience recommend.
