Lucas does something stupid and is shot. (This is good--the alpha cop recognizes his mistake. He's more likeable, I think).
Other cops do something stupid and bystanders get shot. (Not so good. Sandford foreshadowed it nicely. Unfortunately for US readers, a shooting in a mall and its aftermath is now all too easy to visualize.)
Lucas et al make up a small portion of the story. (This is good--too much Lucas can be too wearying.)
Lucas and the Minnesota gang play poker. (This is good.)
Come on, Sandford, the rape scene is beneath you.

Moderate: Rape
I like Sandford's writing, but this plot was a little too gruesome for me.
Man!!!! What a good book. Sandford's bad guys are always BAD, but these guys are disturbing!! I actually had a hard time sleeping one night because I couldn't get a scene out of my mind. John Sandford is just a great author and a great story teller!!! I think this is the best one in the series...so far!
Didn't like this one as much as previous installments in the Davenport saga. The funny byplay between Lucas and friends was still there, but the criminal acts seemed noticeably gorier to me, much more graphic in words and descriptions. It was actually uncomfortable reading it, and I found myself skipping through some of those scenes to get to the other side.
I never go wrong with a Sandford novel and there isn't a Lucas Davenport story I don't love. This one is no different. A page-turner from the opening page and a satisfying ending. One of my very favorite fiction lawmen.
Lucas along with his US Marshall pals are on the case. Fast paced though the plot was a bit limited. Listened to the audio version narrated by Richard Ferrone.
