I received an advanced copy of this title via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a high octane read. It grabs you from the first page and sucks you in on a wild adventure. Think Indiana Jones, or Tomb Raider but BETTER! The plot is a well-structured road map that leads you on a roller coaster ride of twists and turns. This is a brilliantly executed creation that will force readers to reimagine the lore surrounding King Arthur.

An outstanding, well-researched adventure that combines the best elements of bibliophile books with the pulse-chasing escapades of Indiana Jones. Let’s hope the mysteries with Carys at the helm continue—on mold-free paper, of course!

3.5. The vast majority of this book pushed all my crappy adventure novel buttons. Ancient history. Books. Smart women. Smart women reading books. Linguistics! Swoon! It played with tropes, putting things in the most obvious place but not really. But then! The end. Oh my the end. It ran out of gas so quick. Kill everyone, wrap up the story in fifty words, tah dah! So unsatisfactory. With the caveat that I will totally reevaluate that assessment if this turns out to be the first in a series.

I was interested in the book from the blurb and when I got to read it I was happy. I really enjoyed in the first part of the book where I had a feeling I read about new Indiana Jones. All that old books, twists and turns with danger were interesting, some parts connected with Native Americans were confusing, but this is fiction not a scientific research. This is my first book by by Kris Frieswick and I will look for other ones written by him too.

Good story, plenty of sexy historian stuff, characters with good depth, etc etc. Brava.

That having been said...

ARE YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW? DAFYDD?? YOU HAD TO TAKE LOVELY, SEXY, LIFE-AFFIRMING DAFYDD??? Maybe I've had too much sorrow, loss, and wine this week, but Dafydd's death just feels like one between the eyes just now, and with Nicola and John having departed to the proverbial sunset together, wholly unnecessary.

I *suppose* it's the mark of a good storyteller that I care this much. [And my railing against an author's choices are purely tongue in cheek, because they are, of course, your choices to make.] Nonetheless, you, my good woman, owe me a bottle of vinho verde. Or two. Poor, lovely Dafydd...

This book started out so well, I was hooked pretty much the whole time, and it was a great adventure. However, I found the ending a little disappointing. Everything just didn’t seem like it’s resolved properly.

The writing isn't bad, but the ending is ruined by the fact the answer to the mystery is that a Native American origin story is about how said Native American actually originated from Europe.
