This is really hard to rate. It's been a few days since I read this, and I still don't know how I feel about it! 75% or so of this book is full of adorable, hilarious comics about this cute, cranky kitty. It's super relatable for cat lovers and I was having a great time! Then the final 25% or so hit, and this book became a devastating, tragic story of an elderly cat's end days. That was sad enough on its own, but certain elements of Linney's passing hit far too close to home.

I lost my sweet Lotus to early onset/congenital kidney failure back in 2022, and I haven't recovered yet. I'm not sure I ever will, truthfully. And while I appreciate the fact that Lucy Knisley tried to make the story of Linney's death as gentle and loving as it could be—and probably used these comics as an outlet for her own grief—I honestly wish I hadn't read it. 💔

Thank you to the publisher for the gifted copy! All thoughts are honest and my own.

If you enjoy following cats on Instagram as much as I do, you’ll love Woe by Lucy Knisley, a collection of comics about her cat, Linney.  It’s an especially meaningful read now that Linney has passed on.  For those who love iconic kitties with big purrsonalities (such as the Raven’s own, Dashiell), Woe is a hilarious and heartfelt tribute.

This book follows an elderly orange house cat named Linney and her family (two adult humans and a preschooler). The book has a cozy feel that any animal lover or pet owner can relate to, especially Linney's quirks (causing chaos) and "woes" (being vocal). The book feels fast-paced because each story is only a few pages long. There are no chapters, but each story has a different color scheme from the one before it.
I would recommended this book to anyone who loves cozy, slice of life cat stories, but it should be noted that this wonderfully silly elderly cat does not live forever.

Oh, Linney <3

I read all of Lucy's Linney comics as she posted them on IG and just loved her depiction of this very vocal feline and her (supposed) thought processes. Cried buckets when she passed (I had just lost one then the other of my own kitties, so her comic was such a mirror of my own thoughts). I had completely forgot one of the Pal comics where he describes where Linney came from and it's such a "this is from the brain of a toddler so yes, I guess it does make sense" LOL.

Definitely buying when it comes out.
