yet another masterpiece from mister jay kristoff. truly, he's cemented as being my favorite author. the masterful lyricism and poeticism in his writing, yet maintaining the integrity of sensible prose, is astounding and leaves me bewildered with awe with every page i turn. my only issue with this book was that there was a little more sexual content than i would have preferred, but that's a personal preference as someone who doesn't really care for smut. it was beautifully written, though. not entirely gratuitous, but written in his very beautiful prose. if that is up your alley, though, you'll be all for it.
i am so intently hooked on this story. the lore is deep, well-thought out, and the distinct voices of each narrator are compelling. as always, i find it hard to know what to write about books i genuinely enjoyed for fear of spoiling the story, because genuinely, this series is something i believe people should experience without spoilers. it's incredible, and one of my favorite series that i've read in a long time. i'm so invested in its finale, and i'm dying to know where it's heading with the cliffhanger jay left us on.
the writing is emotionally evocative. gabriel has to be one of my favorite characters of all time, and his raw emotion is so potent through the pages. i have no idea how jay intends for gabe's voice to actually sound, though he described it in the last book, but i keep envisioning trevor belmont from the netflix series, and i just hear this grit and emotion, and it's wonderful. gabriel is an intensely flawed character in the most human way possible, but he's deeply empathetic, charismatic, kind, and so much more. knowing that the story is a retelling from his mouth to chronicle for margot, and that in reality, he's sitting in a cell, i know that gabriel's story only ends one way. or at least, so i thought. i won't say much more because it is QUITE the interesting nugget.
i loved this book. i loved the last one. i love all the beautiful art dotted between the pages. it helps so much in visualizing the characters and scenery.
i cannot wait for the final book.

This book was such an epic vampire tale, I really loved how ancient the vampires felt and this book shined some light on just how cruel they can be. I'm excited for the third book to come out! The middle was a bit slow and if you're finding yourself tempted to dnf this book, I highly recommend pushing through, because the ending it worth it!
